Barrick Gold to Suspend Construction on Pascua-Lama Mine

Toronto-based Barrick Gold announced late last week that it was suspending construction work on their mine straddling the Chile-Argentina border, following an injunction imposed by a Chilean appeals court upholding the claims of indigenous communities in the area. Barrick’s press release stated that it was ‘working to address environmental and other regulatory requirements to the satisfaction of the Chilean authorities’ and that their work on the Argentinian side of the border was unaffected.

The injunction is further evidence of the increasingly organised nature of complaints against multinational enterprises for alleged violations of regulatory and environmental standards.
